This Site is dedicated to all those families of the people that have tragically disappeared on flights in and around New Zealand. I only hope that from all the effort in building this site and from all the effort of those taking part in this venture, that it will bear fruit in bringing ‘closure’ to their memories! Gavin Grimmer
A couple of trips ago that I did to Torpedo yard, I was standing besides the cliff
face where this tunnel was meant to be, pondering over the incredible camouflage
job that had obviously been done, when I happened to look down, and what I saw (that
I had overlooked on previous visits) absolutely "blew me away!":
There was a row of 'indents' in the bitumen that looked very obviously like a row
of sunken railway sleepers! These went from the cliff face to as far as the new bitumen.
After thinking about this for a while, I came to the conclusion that what had happened
is that the original sleepers had been tar sealed over, and in time they had rotted
away allowing the bitumen to sink into the void of where they once were.
We measured these 'sleepers' up for their width and spacings, and compared them with
the known measurements of other sleeper locations in the Torpedo Bay Yard and they
were on par.
